BRMmart: Making Report Generation Easy

Jessica Boepple - SSG Oracle BRMGetting historical information out of Oracle BRM can be quite a chore. BRM’s complex nature of its object oriented data store makes the process of data extraction and report generation challenging and inefficient. BRMmart provides a solution that makes report generation faster and easier while helping to prevent performance issues that can occur when pulling data out of BRM for reports.

What Is BRMmart?

A system built strictly for reporting purposes that is designed to allow for improved performance, ease of use for reporting and minimal performance impact on the associated transactional system is called a data mart. BRMmart is a data mart that serves as the middle-man between Oracle BRM and end-user reporting and analysis tools. Information in BRMmart is organized as a star schema, which simplifies user understanding of the data, maximizes database query performance for decision support applications and requires less storage for large transactional databases.

Because BRMmart is separate from BRM’s transactional system, you can decrease the time it takes to generate reports, and the transactional system won’t suffer from an impact to performance. Writing reports directly from BRM’s transaction-based database schema can be difficult and can negatively impact system performance, but BRMmart offers an easy to use, efficient alternative.

BRMmart is broken down into three subject areas: Subscribers, Revenue and Usage.

  • Subscribers provides information about customers, including contact information and status changes associated with subscribers’ accounts.
  • Revenue includes all dollar-impacting events and general ledger information.
  • Usage consists of all usage records extracted and aggregated per business rules.

Each subject area has associated dimensions, which provide more detailed information including:

  • Time
  • Accounts
  • Products
  • Deals
  • Plans
  • Services

What Can BRMmart Do?

BRMmart can provide both analytic and operational reporting for the Subscriber, Revenue and Usage subject areas and the associated dimensions of Time, Accounts, Products, Deals, Plans and Services. Some examples of reports you can generate are listed below.

  • Number of New Accounts Created by Day
  • Cancel and Add Trends by Product
  • Monthly Revenue by GL Account
  • Credit Card Charges by Day by Card Type
  • Number of Usage Records loaded by Day/Week/Month
  • Average Speed by Service
  • And many more!

Oracle BRM supports the ability to extend its base objects to allow customized object definitions. In order to allow reporting and analysis using this same extensible paradigm, BRMmart has been designed using core components based off of BRM’s generic out of the box functionality, as well as extended components to accommodate customizations. This setup works with you to gather reporting data on custom additions without making it a chore to access your unique data metrics.

Conclusion

Information in a transactional system such as Oracle BRM is organized to get orders efficiently into the system. It is not designed to facilitate information gathering and reporting. While BRM is a powerful and effective tool, businesses need the ability to quickly and efficiently generate reports that will help them manage their affairs. With BRMmart’s abstracted, normalized set of tables separate from the transactional system, the process of report generation becomes much more efficient and straightforward. Creating a separate reporting environment decreases the time required to get information out of the transactional system and minimizes performance impact on the transactional system, taking the stress out of getting the information you need.
